Run West Cork 2012 Race Report St Patrick’s Day 10km
Sunshine and clear skies added to the festival atmosphere at this year’s Run West Cork St Patrick’s Day 10km in Ballydehob last Saturday morning. With almost 300 competitors, both runners and walkers, this represented a significant increase on last year’s inaugural race. Walkers set off ahead of the runners and participants wound their way towards Rossbrin Pier before looping back to Ballydehob Pier beside the spectacular 12-arch viaduct.
This years’s winner, Dublin-based Stephen Cleary, a member of Clonliffe Harriers, whose father hails from Cappaghglass, romped home in a new record of 33.57 minutes, ahead of last year’s winner Michael Dullea (35.32 mins). Stephen’s brother Rob took the third place slot in 36.10.
First female was Maura Regan, a Glengarriff resident and a member of Eagle Athletic Club. Winners in the running category received vouchers from our sponsor The Edge Sports Shop in Cork. Our fastest walker on the day was Deirdre Bohane from Skibbereen.
Participants came from all over Co. Cork, Munster, and throughout Ireland with many weekend holiday makers also taking in the event. However it was our American friends, Robert and Mary Roth, who travelled the furthest, detouring especially to Ballydehob for the event before flying back home to the States the following morning.
The organisers, Ballydehob’s St Matthias National School, would like to congratulate everyone for participating and thanks to our sponsors and all our marshals without whom this event could not happen.

A huge congratulations to all!
To St Patrick himself for giving us this holiday and ensuring great weather conditions. And of course for all the wonderful support from the Ballydehob community.
We look forward to seeing you back again next year!
